Our Child

Ready for Anything!

Lucas is our four year old son. He is happy, adventurous, kind, and playful.

Going to the park or the beach for a fun picnic day is one of Lucas’s favorite activities. Lucas is really good at riding bikes and loves riding with his dad after school in our cul-de-sac. Playing ball and hauling dirt with trucks and tractors are also some of his favorite things to do. Lucas is very excited to start soccer lessons in January and make new friends with his teammates. Lucas loves cooking with Felicia and wearing his own apron. Lucas’s favorite breakfast is french toast, and his favorite dinner is pizza. Lucas loves to eat vegetables and fruits. Some of his favorite indoor activities are doing puzzles as a family or building a model toy after dinner, and building towers with his toys. Lucas also loves to create obstacle courses with the sofas and cushions and do gymnastics.

We read three stories every night before going to bed. Since Lucas is fluent in English and Spanish, we read books in both languages. Lucas loves adventure books and books where he finds hidden pictures. Lucas has developed great attention to detail and we are often impressed with how quickly he spots hidden items. Lucas is so excited to be a big brother. Lucas has chosen the toys they will play with, what playgrounds to visit, and can’t wait to tuck-in the baby at night!

Our Cultural Heritage

Our Family in Costa Rica

We are a multicultural family. Rick comes from a Dutch mother and an American father. Rick grew up in San Francisco, surrounded by children of different races and backgrounds, and in a small rural town in Montana. Growing up in polar opposite places gave Rick an appreciation for the wonderful things every place has to offer. As Rick was growing up, he visited his family in Holland and quickly learned the different cultures that were part of him. Rick’s career in the military also provided him the opportunity to see and appreciate different cultures.

Felicia also comes from a mixed background, a Costa Rican mother and Chilean father. Felicia grew up in Costa Rica, embracing and appreciating different cultures, not only as a result of her mother and father’s heritage, but also from her extended family and friends from different nationalities and backgrounds. Felicia’s travel opportunities have also opened her mind to the appreciation of different cultures. Moving to the US required Felicia to learn and embrace a new culture as she later formed a family with Rick. We are very proud our family traditions are a cultural fusion of ours and our extended family’s heritage.

Our Leisure Time

Walking with Dad in the Neighborhood

Rick loves to exercise outdoors, whether it’s running on the beach, swimming at the pool, or doing body weight exercises. Rick is always looking for new ways to push himself and turn his weaknesses into strengths. Recently Rick took up swimming, although he has never been a strong swimmer, he has looked forward getting out of his comfort zone and becoming more efficient. Rick enjoys reading fiction and the world news. Rick follows NFL football and is a huge San Francisco 49ers fan. Rick enjoys grilling on Sundays and watching a football game with our son. Felicia’s favorite hobbies are swimming and scuba diving. Felicia enjoys walking the beautiful trail with eucalyptus trees that is close to our home, exercise outdoors, and walking on the beach. Cooking is one of Felicia’s passions and cooking with our son. Felicia spends a lot of her free time researching recipes and coming up with new dishes. Felicia likes to read historical fiction novels and watch TV series.

We are avid travelers. We have had the opportunity to travel to over 25 countries each. Lately and with the COVID pandemic, we have limited our travels to Costa Rica, Montana, and Mexico. We are looking forward to visiting family in Spain, which is one of our favorite places. Our list of future travels is always growing. We can't wait to travel and discover the world with our children!

Our Extended Families

Lucas with Cousins and Grandpa

Felicia has one brother and a large extended family. Felicia grew up in Costa Rica surrounded by 18 cousins. We visit family at least once a year. Getting together with cousins and their families (40 people and counting) is always a precious gift. Our gatherings revolve around delicious meals and fun conversations, while children play together. There is always much love and laughter to share. Felicia’s brother and his family live 2 hours away, allowing us to visit often and share birthdays and holidays. Our parties are filled with music, bouncy houses, and delicious meals. We have lots of sleepovers for the children to create lifelong memories.

Lunch with Cousins

Rick comes from a small family, raised by two very loving and supportive parents. Rick grew up in San Francisco and Montana, providing him with a great appreciation for both city life and the space and peacefulness of the great outdoors. Rick has lifelong childhood friends in Montana. We visit Rick’s stepmother, Oma, and friends in Montana once a year. Oma loves playing and reading to our son. There is always something baking in Oma’s kitchen. Oma’s home always smells like apple pie. Our visits to Montana include fun outdoor adventures like hiking, biking, and going to the lake. Rick’s aunt lives in Spain. We FaceTime often and can’t wait to visit soon. Aunty enjoys listening to our son’s stories.

Our families are so excited to see us grow through adoption and can’t wait to share their love with our children.

Our House and Neighborhood

Home Sweet Home

We live in California, 15 minutes from the beach and few hours away to four national parks. We live towards the end of a cul-de-sac. Our street has many families with young children, who often play in the street and ride their bikes, including our son.Our home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The nursery is in the bedroom right outside ours and the other bedroom is our son’s. We have an open area that includes the kitchen; dining room, where we share many meals and family gatherings; and the living room, where we play and put puzzles together. We have an ample backyard to entertain with bouncy houses. Our son spends many hours in the backyard hauling dirt with tractors, playing ball with our dog, tackling papa, and blowing soap bubbles.

There is a fantastic aquatic complex in town with pools, slides, and children areas. Felicia took our son to the pool for the first time when he was 4 months old. He loved it! We have many parks close to us. We prepare a picnic basket and set off to find a park. After running around in the park and climbing in the playground, we sit to enjoy our meal.

We are privileged to have many surrounding towns to enjoy family activities, such as farmer markets, summer festivals, pumpkin patches, fruit picking, and Christmas villages. This year our son rode with our neighbor and his son in a big Semi as part of this year’s Christmas parade!

From Us to You

Thank you so much for taking the time to read and consider our profile. We can’t imagine the roller coaster of emotions you must be going through. We do hope you find in our family a safe landing to embark on an enduring relationship as we all journey through adoption. We will forever be grateful for your love and selflessness, for it gives us the opportunity to grow our family.

We met online in 2014 while living in San Antonio, TX. We were drawn to each others desire to travel and try new foods. We dated for two years before we got married in 2016, surrounded by family and friends, on top of a ski mountain outside Glacier National Park in Whitefish, Montana. A couple of months before we got married, we moved to California when Rick got stationed at an Air Force Base. This would be Rick’s last duty station, retiring after 20 years of service in 2021. In 2018, God blessed us with our biological son, Lucas. We were filled with joy and love from the moment we were pregnant. Becoming parents has been the most incredible and fulfilling experience of our lives. Two years later we began planning for our second child. Unfortunately, we were not able to conceive due to secondary infertility. After unsuccessful IVF treatments and considering other avenues to grow our family, we decided adoption was the right path for us. We want nothing more than to add to our family through adoption and having Lucas become the big brother he dreams of becoming everyday!

Lucas is an energetic curious happy boy. He loves playing outside, putting puzzles together, cooking with mom, and creating amazing towers with his toys. He loves his daycare and the friends he has made along the way. He loves traveling to visit family in Costa Rica. He gives the best hugs and wants to make sure we always have a smile on our face. Lucas loves babies and taking care of them. He is very attentive with our youngest niece, making sure she has her pacifier close by or is securely seated at the table. We know how important it is for him to become an older brother because he constantly asks about the arrival of the baby, and is already planning the activities they will enjoy together, like riding bikes, reading books, and going for walks. We have no doubt he is ready and excited to be an amazing big brother.

Since our move to California, Feli has been working from home with a flexible schedule. This has been such a blessing, allowing her to create a work-life balance that permits her to spend quality time with Lucas. Although we both have full-time jobs, family is our priority, and we make sure we spend time with each other. Our usual weekday evening includes Rick picking Lucas up from daycare between 3 and 4pm. They spend time at the swings before coming home. We enjoy a home-cooked dinner, and then we play or put together a puzzle before bedtime.

We are overjoyed to welcome another child into our family! We have many dreams of what our life will be as a family of four, exploring the outdoors, sharing with family and friends, and traveling to discover new places and new experiences. If you honor us in becoming parents to your child, they will become an integral part of our family and he/she will grow up knowing they are loved, safe, and worthy. We will love them unconditionally, protect them, and encourage them to find their unique path. We will always share with them their adoption story and you will always be remembered with love and respect. We will embrace your child’s cultural heritage and make sure they are proud of where they come from. We vow to keep in touch with you and send you letters and pictures of your wonderful child for you to witness how much they are loved and cared for.

Thank you for considering our family. It would be our privilege to love and care for your child. We pray you find peace in your decision and that you are blessed.
