Adoption in Our Lives

Family Beach Time

Our daughter, Charlotte, came to us through adoption in 2016. Becoming parents was simultaneously the most wonderful, humbling, and bewildering experience of our lives.

Charlotte is an amazing, amazing kid with buckets of personality and intelligence. She is just as excited about growing our family as we are, and she is constantly coming up with new ways to get ready for "her baby." We know she will be a wonderful (and maybe slightly bossy) big sister, and we are thrilled that she will be able to share her adoption story with a sibling, and they will be able to share with her.

Someone once said that being a parent is like having your heart walk around outside your body for the rest of your life. We never truly understood how that felt until Charlotte was born, but it definitely feels true for us! Becoming parents has been the greatest joy of our lives. We are constantly striving to make sure that we are leading by good example and that we're providing Charlotte with the experiences and resources that will enrich her life and help her become the person she is meant to be. One thing we know with certainty: our children will always have our unconditional love. We are committed to each other and to being the best source of support, advice, and love for our little ones.

Qualities We Love, Admire and Respect in Each Other

At a Friend's Wedding

Darron About Christina: I love Christina's adventurous spirit and her quiet thoughtfulness. She is a wonderful listener, and people always feel that they could tell her anything without fear of judgment. It has been such a joy watching Christina become a mom through our first adoption. She and Charlotte have a very close relationship, and they're frequently doing fun activities at home or around town. From the minute Charlotte was born, Christina has read to her and sung lullabies at bedtime. She constantly puts others' needs before her own, and our children will definitely be her first priority.

Christina About Darron: Darron is one of the funniest, most creative people I've ever met! Early in our relationship, he started a tradition of making memory books for me (in a sort of claymation-style), which are both hilarious and sentimental, just like him! Even more impressive to me, though, is Darron's character, especially his loyalty and honesty. He is truly a man of his word, and his friends and family know they can always count on him. Most importantly, Charlotte knows she can always count on him. They have great times playing with Legos, swinging on the swing set, and playing hide and seek.

Our Family Traditions

Decorated for Halloween

We both enjoyed many family traditions while we were growing up, and we have established several of our own during the 20 years we have known each other.

Halloween is Darron's favorite holiday, and he has made it a tradition to decorate the house and yard with incredible decorations that he makes himself. Each year he adds to the collection, and we now have holograms of monsters doing the monster mash and a "floating" lantern, among many other creations.

Christmas Goofiness

Christmas is Christina's favorite holiday, and we have fun decorating the house from top to bottom, making Christmas cookies and watching movies, as well as driving around the nearby neighborhoods to look at all the festive displays.

Our traditions aren't limited to the holidays, though. Each year we go to the San Diego County Fair, so we can stuff ourselves with fried foods while we play games and listen to great music. We also plan a ski trip at least once a year, although we would go every weekend, if it were up to Christina!

Our House and Neighborhood

Our Home

We love our neighborhood, which is located just a few miles from downtown San Diego and the beach! Many of our neighbors have young children, and Charlotte has developed some wonderful friendships. We take our dog for walks every evening, and there is a great park down the street for Charlotte to play and run around. She had her first experience on a soccer team there this past Spring! San Diego is a great place to raise a family, and the wonderful weather makes it easy to plan outdoor activities like spending a day at the park, the beach, or visiting the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park.

Our house is a constant hub of activity! Darron loves doing home improvement projects, and Charlotte and Lucky (our puppy) love to supervise. We have a swing set in the backyard and lots of room for Charlotte to ride her trike and Lucky to chase her.

Our Extended Families

With Darron's Family

We are lucky to have so many loving and supportive people in our life. Both of us come from close families, and we are excited that Charlotte will soon have the wonderful experience of having a sibling. Darron is the youngest of three, and Christina is the oldest of four, and we both feel that our brothers and sisters are now our closest friends.

Since Darron is a San Diego "native," his family and many of his childhood friends are still close by, and we get together often for barbecues, birthday parties, or just to hang out and watch a baseball game.

With Christina's Family

Christina's family has all moved to California recently, so we are able to see them for more than just holidays, which is great! Charlotte is thrilled to have her grandparents, aunts, and uncles around to play with (and spoil her!).

We both fondly remember our family vacations, and we've continued this tradition together and with our extended family. We love going to the beach or for a hike together, and Disneyland is one of our favorite places to visit! We are also grateful to have so many fun options close by for camping or ski trips.

From Us to You

We are honored to have the opportunity to write this letter to you and we are extremely grateful that you would take the time to read it. We imagine that you might be feeling some mixed emotions in this moment, and we want to reassure you that if we are meant to take this journey together that we will be there every step of the way, as we are invested in both you and your baby.

We met in 2000 (we like to say we've known each other for the whole century!), when Darron's ex-girlfriend introduced us. We both still chuckle at the way we met, and it is a constant reminder to us to stay open to possibility, no matter the twists and turns that life takes. We got married in 2003, in a charming stone "castle" in a nearby park, but it wasn't quite the fairy tale wedding, since we both had the flu. We still had a blast at our wedding, surrounded by our friends and family, and we've continued to have a blast for the last 18 years, no matter the curve balls.

We knew that we wanted to start a family soon after our wedding, and the diagnosis of infertility was another curve ball. While we pursued various treatments to address the infertility, we also began to seriously consider adoption. Through Christina's volunteer work with Voices for Children, an organization that advocates for children in foster care, the idea of caring for a child who was not biologically related to us became a reality. In 2016 we began our first adoption journey, which led us to our beautiful daughter, Charlotte.

In our daily lives, Darron works in the construction industry, while Christina is currently a stay-at-home mom. Darron worked as an ironworker for 15 years before becoming a special construction inspector. He has helped build and inspect several multi-million dollar projects, like the new downtown library and many buildings at the University of California, San Diego. He feels personally invested in projects which help further education, not only because it aligns with his own priorities, but also because we can envision Charlotte possibly attending school there one day.

Since graduating from Vanderbilt University, Christina found challenging and rewarding work as a research scientist for many years before Charlotte was born. While working in medical research, she also pursued a Masters and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, with the long-term plan of perhaps opening her own practice once the kids are grown. In the meantime, she relishes in being a stay-at-home mom and being able to devote all of her attention to Charlotte's development.

One thing we know with certainty: your child will always have our unconditional love. We are committed to each other and to being the best source of support, advice, and love for your little one, just like we are committed to Charlotte. Although we can't predict what twists and turns life may take, we have promised each other that our children will receive the best education we can provide and that they will have as many opportunities available to them as possible. Our hope is that your child grows up happy and healthy, with the confidence to explore his or her own talents and strengths: some of which will have been shaped by us and some of which will have come from you. Just like with Charlotte's birth family, we look forward to sharing letters and pictures with you over the years, and we are open to yearly visits as well.

Thank you for reading our letter; we hope it has given you a glimpse into our lives. Please know we are thinking of you at this time and we are grateful for your courage and strength.
